Insects of the Maltese Islands

The Maltese Islands are home to an incredible diversity of insects, with over 4,000 recorded species across Malta, Gozo, and Comino. Despite their small size, the islands support a wide range of habitats — from rocky coasts and rural valleys to garigue and woodland areas — providing shelter for countless native and endemic insect species.

Among the most fascinating are the Maltese Swallowtail butterfly (Papilio machaon melitensis), found only in Malta, the vibrant dragonflies that patrol freshwater valleys, and the hardworking Maltese honeybee, a vital pollinator for local flora. Insects in Malta play a crucial ecological role by pollinating plants, decomposing organic matter, and supporting local biodiversity as prey for birds and reptiles.

At Nature Malta, we aim to raise awareness and appreciation for the insect biodiversity of Malta through research, education, and conservation initiatives. Discover the hidden world of Maltese insects — from butterflies and beetles to bees and grasshoppers — and learn how these small creatures make a big difference to the islands’ natural environment.
